Everything about how Torto handles your data, what it will and won't do, and how to reach a person.
Written to match how the app actually behaves. Every factual claim here was checked against the shipping build. The liability, governing-law and consumer-rights clauses have not yet been reviewed by a lawyer, so treat those three as our stated position rather than settled advice.
Privacy policy

The short version
Torto has no server, no user account and no analytics. Your health records are encrypted and stored on your own device. We cannot see them, we do not receive them, and we have nothing to sell or hand over. Deleting them in the app deletes them.
1. Who we are
Torto is published by Automate AI Limited, 7 Richmond Street, Wellington 5018, New Zealand. We are the data controller for the purposes of the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. For any question about this policy, write to hello@torto.app.
2. What Torto stores, and where
Everything you enter is written to storage on your own phone. There is no Torto account and no Torto server, so none of the following is transmitted to us or to anyone else:

Structured health records are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before the ciphertext is written to device storage. The encryption key is held in the iOS Keychain, marked as accessible only while the device is unlocked and only on that device, so it is never copied to another device or to iCloud. Progress photos are stored as files in private app storage and excluded from device backups; they are protected by the operating system rather than encrypted by Torto.
3. What we collect about you
Nothing. Torto contains no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, no crash-reporting service and no user identifier. We do not know how many screens you opened, what you logged, or whether you use the app at all.
4. Permissions and why they exist
Torto v1.0 for iOS requests exactly three things, each at the moment it is needed, and the app works without any of them. Camera, only when you choose to take a meal or progress photo. Notifications, only if you turn on a reminder for your next recorded dose; these are scheduled on your device and are not push notifications sent from a server. Calendar, write-only access, used only when you choose to add an event for your next recorded dose date — Torto cannot read your existing calendar. It does not request microphone, contacts, location, photo-library or health-data access.
5. When data leaves your device
Only when you deliberately send it. Exporting a report hands a file you selected to your operating system's share sheet, and what happens next is between you, the app you chose and that app's own privacy policy. Torto has no visibility of it.
6. Third parties
Torto uses no third-party service that receives your data. The app is distributed through the Apple App Store, and Apple collects its own information about downloads, subscriptions and payments under Apple's privacy policy, not ours. We receive only anonymised sales and subscription totals from Apple; those reports never identify you and never contain anything you logged.
7. Children
Torto is not intended for anyone under 18 and we do not knowingly collect information from children. Since we collect no information at all, there is nothing to delete on request — but write to us if you have a concern.
8. Your rights
Because your records exist only on your device, you exercise most data rights directly in the app: export everything as a JSON file you can keep, or a PDF summary you can share, and delete everything including the photo files Torto owns. Where law gives you a right to access, correct, port or erase data held by us, the honest answer is that we hold none. Write to hello@torto.app and we will confirm that in writing within 20 working days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the New Zealand Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz. If you are in the United States, state privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act and the Washington My Health My Data Act give you rights over consumer health data — those rights are satisfied here by the fact that we never receive your data in the first place, and you can exercise access and deletion directly in the app.
9. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially — in particular if a future version of Torto ever introduces accounts, sync or analytics — we will date the change here and tell you in the app before it takes effect. A change of that kind will be opt-in.

1. Agreement
By downloading or using Torto you agree to these terms. If you don't, please don't use the app. These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and the New Zealand courts have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. Choosing New Zealand law does not take away any right you have under the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in.
2. What Torto is
A licence to use Torto on devices you own or control, for your own personal record-keeping. Torto is a recording tool. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
3. What you're responsible for
The accuracy of what you enter, and every decision you make about your health and your medication. Torto shows you back what you recorded; it cannot know whether a figure you typed is correct.
4. Your data is on your device
Because Torto has no server, your records live only on the device you entered them on. If you lose, reset or replace that device without exporting a backup, the records are gone and we cannot recover them. Export a JSON backup if that matters to you.
5. Acceptable use
Don't reverse-engineer, decompile or redistribute the app, use it to provide clinical services to other people, or resell it. Don't use it for anything unlawful.
6. Intellectual property
The app, the Torto name, the tortoise character and the visual design remain ours. Your records are yours; we claim no licence over them, and could not exercise one if we did.
7. Availability
We may update, change or discontinue features. Because the app is local-first, discontinuation would not take your existing records away from you, though you should keep an export.
8. Disclaimers and liability
Except for the guarantees that cannot lawfully be excluded, Torto is provided as it is, without a warranty that it will be uninterrupted or error-free. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim connected with Torto is limited to the amount you paid us for it in the twelve months before the claim, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or excludes the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 where you acquire Torto as a consumer. If you acquire Torto for the purposes of a business, the Consumer Guarantees Act does not apply.
9. Termination
You may stop using Torto at any time by deleting the app, which removes its data from your device. We may end your licence if you materially breach these terms.

Medical disclaimer

Torto is not medical advice
Torto is a personal recording tool. It is not a medical device, it does not diagnose or treat anything, and it must never be used to decide whether to take, skip, change or stop a dose of any medication. Those decisions belong to you and the prescriber who knows your history.
What Torto does
It records the medication your prescriber gave you, the doses you took and the days you had. Product, form, frequency and marketed strength come from official prescribing information so that what you record matches the real product.
What Torto never does
It does not recommend a medication, suggest a dose, tell you to titrate up or down, interpret a symptom, diagnose a condition, or claim that a pattern in your data means anything clinical. Where it shows general information — for example that a day-after dip is commonly reported — that is clearly labelled as general and is not about you.
About nutrition figures
Torto does not identify food or estimate nutrition from a photograph. Any nutrition value in the app is one you entered, and it is only as accurate as your entry. Protein targets and similar figures are guidance for your own tracking, not a clinical prescription.
About the report
The doctor-visit report is labelled patient self-report because that is exactly what it is: a tidy presentation of what you logged. It is not a clinical record, it has not been validated by a clinician, and your prescriber should treat it as your account of your own experience.
Missed doses
Where Torto shows guidance about a missed dose, it quotes the manufacturer's own labelling and cites the source. It does not tell you what to do. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist.
Speak to your prescriber
Before starting, stopping or changing any medication, and before starting resistance training if you have a condition that might make it unsafe. Nothing in the app replaces that conversation.
Regulatory status
Torto is not a registered or certified medical device in any market, and is not intended to be one. It performs no diagnosis, no calculation that informs a treatment decision, and no interpretation of your data. It stores what you enter and shows it back to you. We keep the app and this site free of wording that would amount to a medical-device claim, and we would seek clearance before adding any feature that changed that.
If something is wrong, call a person
Severe or persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, signs of an allergic reaction, or any symptom that frightens you needs a clinician, not an app. In an emergency, call 911 in the United States or 111 in New Zealand. For a suspected overdose or poisoning, call Poison Control on 1-800-222-1222 in the United States or the National Poisons Centre on 0800 764 766 in New Zealand. For non-urgent health advice in New Zealand, Healthline is 0800 611 116.
Subscription & refunds

The short version
Torto is US$9.99 a month or US$59.99 a year, with a US$149.99 one-off lifetime option. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial that requires a payment method up front. Cancel before day 14 and you are not charged. We remind you two days before the trial ends.
How billing works
Subscriptions are sold through the Apple App Store and Google Play. They take the payment, hold your card details and manage the renewal; we never see your card number. Prices are set in US dollars and converted to local pricing tiers by the store.
The 14-day trial
Every plan begins with 14 days of full access. A payment method is required to start it. Nothing is charged during the trial, and the plan, the price and the date of the first charge are shown on screen before you agree. We send a reminder two days before the trial ends, with the cancel link in it. Cancel any time before day 14 and no payment is taken. Apple offers the free trial once per Apple Account, so if you have trialled Torto before, a new subscription starts charging immediately and the screen will tell you so before you agree.
Renewals
Monthly and annual subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. Cancel any time in your Apple or Google account settings, at least 24 hours before the renewal date, and you keep access until the end of the period you have paid for. The lifetime purchase is a single payment and never renews.
Refunds
Refunds are handled by the store you bought from, under their policy, because they took the payment. Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com. Google: play.google.com/store/account. If a store declines and you think that's unfair, write to us and we'll look at it.
The lifetime option
US$149.99 paid once, for the version of Torto we sell today and its ordinary updates. It is priced at roughly two and a half years of the annual plan, so it only makes sense if you expect to be here a long while. Lifetime means the working life of the product, not of the purchaser: it covers Torto on iOS and its ordinary updates for as long as we publish the app. It does not promise a specific future feature, and it does not cover a separate product if we ever release one. If we discontinue Torto, the version on your device keeps working and your records stay yours; we would give notice and would not be able to offer a pro-rata refund, which is the risk you take in exchange for the lower long-run price.
Price changes
We will tell you before any price change affecting your subscription, and you will have the chance to cancel first. Existing subscribers are not moved onto a higher price without an explicit opt-in where the stores require one. Prices may differ between countries; the price shown in your store at the time you subscribe is the price you pay.
What you keep if you stop paying
Your records are on your device, not on our server, so they are not deleted when a subscription lapses. If your subscription lapses, Torto becomes read-only: you can still open the app, read everything you have ever logged, and export it, but you cannot add new entries until you resubscribe. Exporting your own health record — both the PDF report and the full JSON archive — always works, subscription or not. Getting your data out is not something we will ever charge you for.
Consumer rights
If you are a consumer in New Zealand, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and the Fair Trading Act 1986 give you rights that this page cannot reduce. If you are in the United States, your state's consumer-protection law applies and the App Store's own terms govern the transaction, because Apple is the seller. Wherever you are, these statutory rights sit above anything written here.

Torto on iOS is not a web app and sets no cookies. It contains no analytics or advertising technology.
This website
This site sets no cookies. It has no analytics, no embedded video, no chat widget and no third-party scripts, and its fonts are served from this domain rather than a font CDN. No consent banner is required because there is nothing non-essential to consent to.
If we add analytics
If we later add any measurement, this section will name the tool, what it records, how long it keeps it and how to refuse it — and in the EU and UK you will be asked to consent before anything non-essential is set.
Embedded content
There is none. Fonts are self-hosted, and there are no third-party badges, players or trackers, so loading this site reveals your IP address to nobody but our host. We will update this section if that ever changes.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser at any time. Nothing on this site needs them to work.
Accessibility statement

What we aim for
Torto targets WCAG 2.2 level AA. The app was designed for people in their forties, fifties and sixties, so the decisions that usually get argued about were settled up front: body text starts at 17pt, every tap target is at least 44pt, and colour never carries meaning on its own.
What that means in practice
Text and background pairings are contrast-checked, and the app ships a dark mode built on moss and ink rather than pure black. Numbers use tabular figures so digits don't shift as they change. Severity is shown with a label as well as a colour, so a heat strip is still readable if you don't distinguish those hues.
Assistive technology
Screens carry accessibility labels, roles and state, and the injection-site picker and photo comparison expose adjustable values rather than relying on drag alone. Colour-contrast pairings are checked by automated tests that run on every change, so a regression fails the build rather than shipping.
Known limitations
Two, stated plainly. VoiceOver and Dynamic Type have been exercised in the simulator but not yet verified end-to-end on a physical device, so we cannot claim WCAG 2.2 AA conformance until that testing is done. And the app has not had an independent accessibility audit. We would rather name both gaps than imply a level of assurance we have not earned.
